Tips to breastfeed on the go: the guide to feeding anytime, anywhere
When your baby is hungry, that cry isn’t just noise. It’s like an alarm going off in your brain. Suddenly, all you can think is “I must feed my baby now!”. Nothing else matters.
Whether you’re halfway through the food shop, crossing the street, or squished on a bus seat, breastfeeding on the move can feel a bit wild at first.
But with the right mindset and a comfy clever outfit, it will start to feel like second nature!
At Latchette, we’re here to make those moments easier and maybe even a little stylish. Here are our favourite tips for breastfeeding on the go.
1. Your Outfit
Nursing in public is 99% confidence and 1% clever clothing. Choose pieces designed for "easy boob access". Look for:
-
Discreet zips or lifts
-
When it's a bit colder outside, clever layers that allow easy access to your boobs
-
Stretchy and comfortable fabrics
-
A nursing bra: not only for support but to hold those trusted breast pads (This is particularly useful for the first few months of breastfeeding when leaks are a coming thing)
2. The Bag Checklist
Be prepared without overpacking:
-
Water bottle: as soon as your baby latches, the thirst kicks in!
-
Light muslin in case the baby spits
-
The nappy bag (some babies want to breastfeed to help them poo!)
3. Own Your Space
Breastfeeding in public is your right. But if you are feeling self-conscious the first few times, try:
-
Practicing at home in front of a mirror
-
Wearing layers for extra confidence - the Tilbea London underbust vest is great to cover the belly!
-
Breastfeed in public when you are out with your partner or a friend: while chatting with them, you'll soon forget there is a baby latching on your boob!
4. Find Your local Feeding-Friendly Spots
When out and about in your neighbourhood, spot the places where you could make an emergency feed stop :
-
Park benches
-
Your local cafe(s)
-
Libraries and community centres
