Breastfeeding help from a lactation expert: 3 things every new mum should know

Breastfeeding help from a lactation expert: 3 things every new mum should know

We met with the lovely Milly Godwin, a midwife and lactation consultant who founded MilkyStarts to support parents in breastfeeding their babies, whatever challenges they’re facing and whatever their feeding goals may be.

Milly is an accredited International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), the highest qualification in breastfeeding expertise and recognised worldwide.

At Latchette, we know that breastfeeding can feel full of unknowns, especially at the beginning. So we asked Milly three quick but essential questions to help shed some light on the journey.

1. What is the most common misconception about breastfeeding?

That breastfeeding is easy and will come naturally. Breastfeeding is actually a learned skill for both mums and babies. Yes, it is biologically natural and some parents do find it effortless from the start. But for most, it takes time and support. The cultural idea that mums should just "get on with it" can leave parents feeling guilty or inadequate when it doesn’t go smoothly right away.

2. What’s one simple tip you give to new mums starting their breastfeeding journey?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help early. Breastfeeding can be tricky at first and getting support, whether from a midwife, a lactation consultant, or even a trusted friend, can make a huge difference. Back in the day, breastfeeding was something the whole family supported. Grandmas, sisters, aunties... you were never meant to figure it all out on your own.

3. If you could recommend just one accessory to support breastfeeding, what would it be and why?

A supportive and comfortable breastfeeding bra. It helps reduce strain, gives your breasts the support they need, and can even help prevent issues like mastitis. Just make sure it also gives you easy access for feeds.
